A bill that would allow bereavement leave for pregnancy loss and failed adoptions advances in hopes of becoming a state law.

Bill A2198 was cleared by the Assembly Labor Committee on Monday. Sponsored by Assemblywoman Shanique Speight and Assemblyman William Sampson, this legislation would expand the New Jersey Family Leave Act.

It would allow protected employees to take up to 21 days of leave to grieve the loss of a child through miscarriage, stillbirth or termination of a pregnancy for medical reasons. It also covers leave for unsuccessful adoption or fertility treatments.

This bill will now go to the Assembly floor for further review.
