A Mount Vernon firefighter recruit has been dismissed from the academy.

According to officials at the academy who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the recruit had an extensive criminal record. According to the officials, the recruit was not put through a thorough background check before being sent to the academy.

Officials also say the recruit had accumulated too many demerits for failing to complete the required work.
