The City of Mount Vernon and the Public Works Union 456 have reached a new contract agreement after seven years without pay raises.

This development follows reports of an "unofficial slowdown" by public works employees, resulting in a buildup of garbage on the streets.

The agreement, which could entail pay raises of up to 14% for some workers, awaits ratification by the union and approval by city officials.
