Middletown man charged in weekend slaying
A Middletown man has been charged with murder in a fatal stabbing in Wallkill over the weekend.
Authorities arrested 23-year-old Damante Stansberry Tuesday. He was arraigned in Wallkill Town Court Wednesday morning.
Wallkill police say the Middletown man fatally stabbed 52-year-old Jeffrey Harris at the victim’s home on Brookline Avenue Sunday in the Town of Wallkill.
Harris‘ brother, David Harris, gave News 12 photos of his brother with him and their mom. Harris is traveling to New York from Florida to make funeral arrangements.
“He was just in Florida with me taking care of our ailing mother,” said Harris. “He was here for 30 days. [It was the] last day I got to hug and tell my brother I love him in person."
Authorities have not released a motive for the slaying or said how the suspect may have known the victim.
State police and the FBI Safe Streets Task Force joined Wallkill police to investigate the case after Harris was found fatally stabbed in the torso.
The victim’s brother says Stansberry is expected to face a grand jury sometime this week.
News 12 has calls out to authorities for more information.
