Westchester County legislators approved a new DWI law Monday that would allow authorities to confiscate cars of motorists convicted of driving while intoxicated or drag racing.
The new legislature, which is expected to go into effect next December, will only apply to arrests made by county police officers on county roads.
"We want to send the message: 'If you're arrested by county police, you could lose your car,'" says Legislator Peter Harckham (D).
The law comes with exceptions, including situations in which the drunken driver took the car without the owner's permission. People for whom losing a car would cause a major financial hardship will also be exempt.
