A fire destroyed two businesses and several apartments on City Island Avenue Sunday.

The flames broke out around 12 p.m. at Filomena's Pizzeria. Witnesses say they heard loud explosions at the restaurant before flames shot out its windows and doors.

Authorities say the fire spread to two other buildings. It took 45 minutes for firefighters to get the situation under control.

Eleven firefighters were injured fighting the blaze.
