An Afghan family of seven is set to move to Westchester County next month.
The family was one of the lucky ones to leave Afghanistan before the U.S. withdrawal.
Volunteers with Hearts & Homes for Refugees is now preparing to help them resettle.
The nonprofit also helps Afghans who are eligible for special immigrant visas, or SIVs, complete their paperwork.
Many people are still stuck in Afghanistan. Out of the organization's 80 SIV cases, only eight families have made it out of the country.
"They are in a lot of danger right now, and a lot of them are sheltering in place or hiding in their homes or in other people homes," says Amy Robertson, of Hearts & Homes for Refugees.
Hearts & Homes for Refugees hopes to sponsor more Afghan families who want to resettle in the Hudson Valley.
