Abortion rights took center stage Monday in the race to fill a state Senate seat in Westchester?s 35th District. The New York chapter of the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL) made a surprise move by endorsing Senator Nick Spano (R-NY), a 20-year incumbent, over Democratic challenger Andrea Stewart-Cousins. NARAL leader Kelli Conlin says Senator Spano has been at the helm of every state Senate bill passed that protects a woman?s right to choose. The group says it will even raise money for Spano?s reelection.Like Spano, Stewart-Cousins also favors a woman's right to choose. Stewart-Cousins ran against Spano once before and lost by a mere 18 votes. Experts say Democrats anticipate a big win, with Eliot Spitzer running for governor and Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) up for re-election. Voter registration rolls show Democrats have an almost 34,000-vote advantage over Republicans in the district.
