Dozens of ceremonies were held Monday to honor the memory of the late civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Hundreds gathered in Tarrytown for the annual Legacy Youth Awards to recognize local young people who continue to pursue Dr. King's dream.

Seven young people were recognized at the ceremony and luncheon.

Awa Nyambi, of Hartsdale, received the Social Justice Award. The Woodlands High School senior is ranked third in his class of 137, has a grade point average of 96.8, is captain of the varsity wrestling, soccer and golf teams and will attend Harvard University in September.

Awardees were nominated for outstanding leadership and community service. A committee made the final choices.

 

While the ceremony honors the past contributions of Dr. King, it also looks ahead to what the future holds.
