A man is dead after being shot by police in Mott Haven on Thursday morning.

Police say they apprehended 44-year-old Lucien Colon, a known sex offender in New York State, with active bench and parole warrants.

He was believed to be in an apartment in 105 Willis Ave. Police met with a woman at the door who gave officers permission to enter.

That was when police found Colon with a firearm in his hand. Police asked him to show his hands and he responded that he had a gun. Officers repeatedly asked him to step out of the room and he responded with, "It’s not going to happen."

Officers interacted with Colon for a minute and a half as they tried to de-escalate the situation and gave him multiple commands to drop the firearm. One of the officers fired a shot and struck Colon. They rendered aid before EMS took him to NYC Health+Hospitals/Lincoln and was pronounced deceased. A firearm was found at the scene.

Some officers were also taken to an area hospital for evaluation.

Colon was on parole for a 2013 murder and was released in 2023. He was also found guilty of rape in 1997 and attempted murder in 1995.
