Letting dogs run loose could soon come with a hefty fine, thanks to a bill that advanced in Hartford on Monday.

The first offense would cost up to $350, the second time would cost $500 and a third offense could mean criminal charges.

The bill now heads to the full state Senate.

There is not a statewide leash law in Connecticut, but state law restricts a dog’s ability to roam.

The bill would exempt hunting dogs and farm dogs.
