Potholes pack a punch, costing drivers thousands in repairs

Drivers in the Bronx say potholes are becoming one of their most costly expenses this time of year, as craters along East 233rd Street in Woodlawn continue to damage vehicles.

Motorists told News 12 they try to swerve around the potholes when they can, but many say they do not always see them in time. They say the result is frequent and expensive repairs — from blown tires to damaged axles and ball joints.

Mechanics at Five Jay’s Automotive say pothole-related damage spikes this season. The shop reports seeing about 20 cars a week with issues caused by hitting potholes. Repair costs can range from a few hundred dollars for a tire to several thousand dollars for more extensive damage, according to the shop.

In one recent case, a car arrived with severe front-wheel damage, leaving it effectively operating on three wheels. Mechanics said multiple components were affected after the vehicle struck a pothole.

For many drivers, the financial burden falls on them or their insurance. Some say filing a claim with the city can be frustrating, noting that the city must have had prior written notice of the pothole and failed to repair it within 15 days for a claim to be considered.

According to the New York City Department of Transportation, the city fills more than 170,000 potholes each year, with an average response time of two days.

Until repairs are made, Bronx drivers say they are left hoping they will not be the next victim.
