Lambert Castle, a historical landmark in Passaic County, is set to reopen to the public this weekend after several years of restoration work.

“For about the last three years, we’ve been going through a restoration that is designed to restore the historic elements. To use the most modern science to find things like what the paint actually looked like back when the Lambert family lived here,” said John Bartlett, a Passaic County commissioner.

Lambert Castle was built in 1892 by silk manufacturer Catholina Lambert. It was originally named “Bella Vista.”

County officials say the $21 million restoration project included structural repairs, interior restoration and accessibility upgrades aimed at preserving the historic character of the building while making it accessible to modern visitors.

The three-story mansion now allows visitors to walk through preserved rooms that reflect life in the late 19th Century, along with exhibits featuring artwork, historical displays and stories from Passaic County’s past.

“Lambert Castle is a chance to step into the past, to feel what it was like when Paterson was America’s Silk City,” Bartlett said. “And to think about the stories that brought us to where we are here today.”

The castle will reopen to the public Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with free admission offered throughout the grand reopening weekend.

More information on visiting can be found at seepassaiccounty.org.
