Gov.-elect Mikie Sherill has submitted her congressional resignation letters to Gov. Phil Murphy and Speaker Mike Johnson.

“Serving New Jersey’s 11th District in Congress has been the honor of a lifetime,” Sherrill wrote in a social media post accompanying copies of the letters. “I will continue that service, focused on lowering costs and expanding opportunity, as your 57th Governor.”

Sherrill was elected as New Jersey’s newest governor earlier this month, defeating Republican opponent Jack Ciattarelli.

Murphy will now call for a special election to replace Sherrill.
