Police say a 15-year-old from Lindenhurst has been arrested after threatening to shoot people at Brennan High School in West Babylon on Wednesday afternoon.

The threat comes one day after a deadly school shooting in Georgia.

According to police, a 911 caller reported the student made that threat during an online chat involving other students from the school.

The threat was not made during school hours.

Following an investigation, the teen, whose name is not being released due his age, was charged with making a threat of mass harm.

The teen was released into the custody of family and will be arraigned at Suffolk County Family Court on a later date.

Police tell News 12 out of an abundance of caution, they are stepping up patrols around the school.

The FBI says youth violence is one of the greatest problems in the United States.

It has partnered with state and local governments for prevention and enforcement programs, specifically related to school shootings.

On Long Island, Nassau and Suffolk police train year-round to protect students and staff at schools.

Police say they patrol schools, work with Homeland security, do active shooter trainings, regularly meet with school officials and more.
