The $1.7 billion Hunts Point Access Project is officially complete, as state transportation officials unveiled major upgrades Monday at Concrete Plant Park.
The project included a full redesign of the Sheridan, transforming it from a highway into a boulevard aimed at creating safer, more walkable streets.
“It’s easier to cross for our community,” said Maria Torres, president of The Point. “You know it’s a six-lane highway that we have to cross every day to get to the trains and other parts of the Bronx.”
The upgrades also include new Bruckner Expressway ramps, improved signage and freshly paved sidewalks.
“Everything is changed up. It’s not looking all crusty the way it used to look,” said Lisette, of Throgs Neck. “It looks nice.”
According to the state Department of Transportation, the three-phase project took six years to complete.
Officials say the improvements are expected to reduce congestion by rerouting commercial trucks away from local streets. and providing direct access to the Hunts Point Market.
“Thirteen thousand trucks off the road, providing those trucks direct access to the Hunts Point Market. They're not weaving through local networks, local neighborhoods,” said Marie Therese Dominguez, commissioner of the New York State DOT.

“We have a lot of electric cars now, so having more of those things is good,” Lisette said.
The project also expanded green spaces connecting Garrison Park and Concrete Plant Park, opening new waterfront access for Bronx residents.
The DOT says its next priority in the South Bronx will be upgrades to several bridges along the Cross Bronx Expressway.
