Students brave chilly waters for surfing contest at Spring Lake Beach

Beach season may be over, but that didn't stop student surfers from hitting the waters at Spring Lake Beach Sunday.
The surfers competed in the National Scholastic Surfing Association Northeast Regional High School Championships, which was held near Ludlow Avenue by North Pavilion.
Organizers say 22 teams from schools across New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania attended. Judges scored the surfers based on a scaled from one to 10, which includes criteria like the surfer's position on a wave, size of the wave, turns, control and smoothness.
Some coaches say they are seeing more girls joining their teams and events like this indicates surfing is a growing sport for women.
The Manasquan Surf Team has won the championship five times.
The winning team will compete in the National Scholastic Surfing Association's finals in California on June 26, 2020.
