A fire chief in Orange County who referred to George Floyd protesters as "pavement apes" appears to be back on duty.

Washington Heights Volunteer Fire Chief Chuck Healy was suspended in June after posting racist remarks on his Facebook page and referring to his racially mixed grandchildren as "colored."

Multiple sources confirm to News 12 that Healy, who serves with the department in Wallkill, was reinstated in July.

Town Supervisor Frank DenDanto says he's disappointed by the department's decision.

News 12 reached out to the Washington Heights Fire Department multiple times over the past few weeks for comment, but has not heard back.
