As demonstrations continue across the nation, it is also igniting a push to head to the voting polls.

"Politics and protests go hand in hand" is a message voiced by Rep. Antonio Delgado in a Washington Post op-ed and by former President Barack Obama on Facebook.

Obama's post said, "It’s mayors and county executives that appoint most police chiefs and negotiate collective bargaining agreements with police unions. It’s district attorneys and state’s attorneys that decide whether or not to investigate and ultimately charge those involved in police misconduct. Those are all elected positions."

 

Over the last decade, voter turnout has been on an upward trend but for midterm or local elections turnout is still incredibly low.

In 2018 elections for the governor and state attorney general, roughly 50% to 60% of voters turned out in Westchester, Dutchess and Rockland counties.

In 2017, turnout dropped below 50% for more localized races including county executives, mayors and local courts.

Those who haven't registered to vote can't vote in the primary, but have until October to register for this year's general election.
