A portion of Lenoir Preserve in Yonkers is now a memorial for more than 1,000 Westchester residents who lost their battle with the coronavirus.
Inside a birdhouse are purple ribbons and markers to write the names of loved ones who died from the virus.
Members of the community can come on their own time and pay their respects by hanging the ribbons on a roster or nearby trees.
Ribbons of Remembrance aims to recognize every fatality as a human being rather than a statistic.
"Every one of these individuals had somebody who loved them, somebody who cared about them. I was somebody's spouse, somebody's father somebody's mother, somebody's sister, or coworker, or person they knew in the neighborhood, a person they knew in the house of worship," said Westchester County Executive George Latimer.
Latimer says he hopes to find a more permanent way to memorialize the loved ones by winter.

Briefing Notes:
  • County Executive Latimer says that COVID-19 statistics for Westchester were not immediatly available from the state. Check the state's COVID-19 tracker for latest data.
  • Latimer outlines "Ribbons for Remembrance" program dedicated to Westchester County residents who have lost their lives to COVID-19.
  • Latimer says antibody testing at County Center and contact tracing are underway in Westchester. He says he is thinking about possibly opening up other places of recreation.
