Temporary hospitals set up across NYC to help in COVID-19 treatment

Local hospitals could be seeing some relief today.

Two temporary hospitals are opening up today around the city, including in Manhattan where USNS Comfort is docked at Pier 90.

The ship has 750 to 1,000 beds along with 1,200 doctors, nurses, medical staff and members of the U.S. Navy who are ready to treat patients who are not battling COVID-19.

The goal is to make room for those diagnosed with coronavirus at hospitals around the city. The mayor says those facilities are preparing to become full intensive care units if necessary.

Samaritan’s Purse, an international Christian relief organization, partnered with Mount Sinai Health System and in two days were able to build an emergency field hospital. It’s in the east meadow of Central Park. The tents can house 68 patients suffering from COVID-19.
News 12 s told there is a 10-bed ICU with 10 ventilators for patients who need them.The 72-member disaster assistance response team including doctors, nurses and other specialists will be on the ground as long as they're needed.

Meanwhile, more temporary hospitals are planned for all the boroughs, including Brooklyn Cruise Terminal and in the Bronx at the New York Expo Center. The Army Corps of Engineers is working on these locations, but still no word yet on when they’ll open.
