The schools in the East Ramapo Central School District remain closed after three students have now tested positive for coronavirus.

A letter to the community from the East Ramapo Central School District superintendent says three students tested positive for coronavirus even though they are said to not be showing any symptoms.

Officials say one student attends Hempstead Elementary School, another at Pomona Middle School, and another at Ramapo High School. The grades of the students are not known yet.

In a statement the district says, "As per the recommendation of the commissioner of health, anyone who spent time in Hempstead Elementary School, Pomona Middle School and Ramapo High School on or after Friday, March 6 must self-quarantine."

The district was already closed for cleaning because students were exposed to coronavirus. School officials say the schools with the students who tested positive will be closed until at least March 21 for continued cleaning, progress monitoring and social-distancing.

District officials say they are still waiting for test results and instructions from the Health Department as to when the rest of the schools can reopen.

The school district says it understands these closures may inconvenience families, but says its primary concern is the health and well-being of students and staff.

Rockland County now has a total of six confirmed cases of the coronavirus all coming from the town of Ramapo.
