Long Island community members gathered to remember a police detective who lost his life serving others over one year ago.
NYPD Det. Brian Simonsen was just 42 years old when he was killed by friendly fire responding to a robbery at a T-Mobile store. He hailed from Calverton.
Friends and family gathered at Jamesport Cemetery for a prayer service Thursday. Many shared stories and memories about Simonsen.
Simonsen was remembered as a brave man and someone who left a lasting impression on those he met. His widow says hearing those kind words always puts a smile on her face.
"It makes me feel good. My main mission has been that he's not forgotten," she says. "I always say it feels like it happened yesterday, but as much as I miss him, I feel like it's been forever."
Simonsen served in the 102nd Precinct for 19 years, where he became a trusted part of the community. His best friends and retired police officer Mike Lojko says he'll always remember the good times they shared.
"Everybody drew to him," says Ljoko. "He was always the life of the party."
All throughout the Jamesport community, where Simonsen grew up, blue ribbons and flags can be seen, displayed in his honor. There's also a sign as drivers enter the town reading, "NYPD Smiles," which was his nickname.
After the prayer service, those in attendance gathered at the Jamesport Fire Department.
