Transformer explosion knocks out power to 80 customers in Orange CountyPosted: Updated:
A transformer explosion created traffic troubles and a power shutdown in Orange County Thursday morning.
One resident who lives along Orange Turnpike and East Mombasha Road in Monroe said they heard the explosion around 5:30 a.m. and looked out the window to see a fire in their front yard.
"It started at 2:30. I heard like something shake, like the house shake. And I literally thought my radiator was on fire in my room. And then the electricity went off and back on. And then at 4:30 the same thing happened, and I saw flashes outside. By the time we looked outside the pole was on fire as well as the front yard near the trees,” says Monroe resident Danielle.
Monroe police and fire department personnel responded along with Orange and Rockland Utility crews to put out the fire and turn the power off.
News 12 is told nearly 80 customers lost power.
Crews were on scene digging to make sure there were no other issues underground. Orange Turnpike near East Mombasha Road reopened around 3 p.m.
