New City Jewish school closed Friday following overnight break-in

Posted: Updated:

Police in Rockland County are investigating whether anti-Semitism could be the reason someone broke into a Jewish school in New City.

According to police, a person broke into the Ashar School in New City just before midnight. The break-in was caught on security camera, which is now under review.

Police say the suspect appears to have forcibly opened locked doors. It's unknown what they may have taken, but police say no signs of hate have been found inside the school.

The break-in caused the school to close Friday. Parents told News 12 they were notified this morning after their children had boarded buses that they had to pick them up once the school ended up being closed for the day.

Parents have also been left wondering why the school's extensive security system, which it even touts on its website, wasn't activated.

Police say school administrators only found out about the incident Friday morning as well.
