Posted: Updated:

Officials say three people were killed and one was injured in a shooting in the town of Newburgh Sunday morning.

Police say it happened during a home invasion at a house located at 1751 Route 300 in the Chadwick Lake area around 8 a.m.

They say the victims killed were an adult male and female in their 20s, and a 9-year-old boy.

A 3-year-old boy was airlifted to a nearby hospital where he remains in serious condition.

Officials say an uninjured child was also found inside the home.

Newburgh Town Supervisor Gil Piaquadio says this was a targeted attack and there is no threat to the public.

Police say their investigation has led to one person of interest in custody.

"We believe it's a known person to the victims," says Police Chief Bruch Campbell. "This wasn't a random act."

The town of Newburgh Police Department, the New York State Police, and the Orange County District Attorney's Office are cooperatively conducting the investigation.

The DA says when police make a charging decision, the person held accountable will be held for grand jury action in Orange County and will face serious charges.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Newburgh police.

The Newburgh school district says it will have a crisis counselor at hand on Monday to help support children and staff.
