‘Smishing’ text scam targets M&T Bank customersPosted: Updated:
Scammers are trying to target M&T Bank customers on their cellphones, the bank says.
According to M&T Bank, the scam involves a text message saying that a customer’s account or cards have been restricted. The text message looks legitimate and includes a link that brings users to an identical M&T page asking them to confirm important personal information.
The text and M&T page are part of a scam called “smishing,” which is phishing that targets victims through their cellphones instead of emails.
M&T Bank is sending customers a warning, telling them to "not respond to these malicious requests and never provide your information to unsolicited texts, emails or calls."
Banks nationwide have reported a surge in these types of texts including Wells Fargo, Chase and Bank of America. The Better Business Bureau says the best way to stay protected is to contact a bank directly after receiving a suspicious text.
