Police: New Rochelle father stabs son in the chest with large kitchen knifePosted: Updated:
A New Rochelle father is facing charges for allegedly stabbing his son during a dispute on New Year’s Day.
Police say Nelson Vargas, 60, stabbed his 21-year-old son in the chest with a large kitchen knife after an argument at their apartment complex on Drake Avenue.
The victim was taken to a hospital with injuries to his lung and heart. He underwent emergency surgery and is in critical, but stable condition.
Nearby resident Jennifer Ravanales was shocked after learning of the incident from her mother.
“I know that there was fire trucks and ambulances and the police were here,” says Ravanales.
News 12 is told Vargas’ relationship with the victim and a younger daughter seemed normal.
"I've never had reason to think there was anything but love in this family,” says neighbor of 20 years, John Thomas. "I am shocked. I'm saddened. I think saddened is a greater feeling I have."
Vargas has been charged with assault. He remains behind bars at the Westchester County jail on a $75,000 bond.
