Cornwall store owner credited with foiling armed robbery

A convenience store owner in Orange County is being credited with foiling an armed robbery at gunpoint by wrestling the suspect to the ground.

DB Mart owner Chaudhery Jaweed told News 12 he was held up Tuesday night in the Village of Cornwall at gunpoint.

The 68-year-old was getting ready to close the store at 11:15 p.m. when he says a backpack-clad teenager came in trying to buy electronic cigarettes and alcohol.

Jaweed says he refused and the teen asked to change his shirt, instead grabbing a gun from his bag. Police now say what the teen was holding was a fake gun.

The owner says it all went down as the suspect had his unsuspecting mother waiting in the car. He says that woman came inside the store, shocked to find them wrestling on the floor.

Jaweed says he was able to disarm the suspect and keep him from leaving the store until police could arrive to make an arrest.
