Clarkstown teen to face ‘tough disciplinary action’ after school shooting hoax

Posted: Updated:

A suspected gunman inside Felix Festa Felix Festa Middle School last month caused an hourslong lockdown at the West Nyack building.

Police say it was all a hoax.

Detectives tracked down three phone calls made to the school to a 15-year-old boy in Chile who met a Clarkstown student while online gaming. The two then allegedly conspired to make their online friendship into a real-world nightmare.

Clarkstown police say they can't prosecute the Chilean boy because of extradition issues. The unidentified Clarkstown teen will face youth court.

Consumer Reports Digital Security Editor Bree Fowler says parents can block games and set limits on screen time, but the most critical thing, she says, is to talk with kids.

“You have to teach your kid to be responsible and protect themselves and that you really shouldn't share too much,” says Fowler.

Police say they aren't releasing the student’s name, but assured the community he will face tough disciplinary action.
