Worker trapped in dry well for 4 hours in Pearl River

Posted: Updated:

A man is recovering today after falling into a dry well in Rockland County on Thursday.

Orangetown police say it happened yesterday at a home on West Washington Avenue in Pearl River.

They say the man was inspecting the driveway for a job when the ground beneath him suddenly collapsed and he fell into the unused water well.

News 12 was told he was stuck for four hours about 30 to 35 feet underground until the residents came home.  "There was a large sinkhole to the side of the driveway between two properties and the party was down to the hole.  He was able to communicate with us," says Pearl River Fire Chief Joel Spoelstra.

The victim is in his 20s. He was taken to Westchester Medical Center where he is expected to make a full recovery from leg and back injuries.
