Yonkers church gives out over 2,000 free Thanksgiving turkeys

Posted: Updated:

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and a Yonkers church is helping those in need by serving up a delicious, hot meal.

St. Peter's Church is holding its annual Thanksgiving food drive and turkey distribution today.

There are dozens of organizations, schools, first responders, and various businesses that all give a helping hand to collect turkeys and food so that families in need can enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. “It’s a great tradition we have here in Yonkers, I think it’s been decades since our first distribution happened. Thanksgiving is family time, so it’s not just giving a meal but the resources to sit down with their family on Thursday and share that time together,” says Father Donald Kaufman.

In the past, St. Peter’s has given out between 2,000 and 6,000 pounds of food during their Thanksgiving food drives.

According to officials at Feeding Westchester, one in five people in our county will experience food insecurity this year.
