Chappaqua resident throws hat into ring for Lowey seat

Posted: Updated:

A former official in the Obama administration is the latest Democrat to announce her candidacy for Rep. Nita Lowey's congressional seat.

Evelyn Farkas, of Chappaqua, made her announcement on MSNBC's 'Morning Joe' program Monday morning.

Until last week, she was a national security contributor for NBC/MSNBC.

Farkas served as a deputy assistant secretary of defense, in charge of policy for Russian and Ukraine.

She says she was one of the first to express concerns about President Donald Trump's ties to the region.

Farkas says her goal is to protect American democracy and fight terrorism, while helping the people in her district.

She recently moved back home from D.C. after learning Lowey would not be seeking re-election.

Seven Democrats have announced their candidacy, along with one Republican.
