Parents demand reinstatement of New Rochelle football coach

Posted: Updated:

Athletes - past and present – rallied behind a beloved New Rochelle football coach after he was unexpectedly reassigned.

The move sparked new attacks against New Rochelle Superintendent Dr. Laura Feijoo, who reassigned coach Louis DiRienzo from his coaching and teaching position.

"I'm well-aware this is a challenging circumstance of his reassignment, and it's a challenge even more because I'm unable to share many of the details people are inquiring about," says Fejioo.

Dr. Feijoo says under confidentiality rights, she can't say why DiRienzo, also known as Coach D., was reassigned.

Reassignment happens if someone violates school policy.

According to a tweet from NRHS Football Parent Association, the coach helped a student in distress leave school with her parent.

Ray Rice, perhaps the most well-known Hugeunots alum, said he was just as shocked to learn about the reassignment, days before Saturday's playoff game at Mahopac.

"I know what happened, you know what happened, did it deserve public humiliation?" he asked.

Parents say it's not about winning a football game, or even a championship title, but about standing up for a man they call a father figure to many students

Dr. Feijoo tried to reassure parents the team will be OK, saying the coaches have pulled together and are supporting the students at the school.

DiRienzo will continue to get paid, but he isn't allowed on school grounds.

A final decision to bring him back will be determined after an investigation is complete.
