Political insider discusses DACA importance ahead of Supreme Court hearings

Posted: Updated:

A former Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security who worked under the Obama administration discussed the importance of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals on Wednesday in the Hudson Valley.

This comes a week before the Supreme Court begins hearing arguments.

Immigration rights group Neighbors Link discussed immigration policy over lunch, as residents got to hear from political insider Alejandro Mayorkas.

Under the Obama administration, the former deputy secretary of Homeland Security implemented several initiatives, including DACA. The program, which provides protection from deportation, may not be around much longer.

In 2017, the Trump administration decided to phase it out. Next week, the Supreme Court will hear arguments on DACA, stemming from lawsuits challenging President Donald Trump's decision to end the policy.

“President Trump has previously expressed his support for the youth and it's unfortunate that his actions don't mirror the words he once spoke,” says Mayorkas. “I think the future of youth who know no country other than this one who've been brought here as infants, their futures are at stake.”

Nearly 700,000 undocumented immigrants, including 30-year-old Jeremy Malpartida, await their fate.

“I have high hopes we can keep this going,” says the Peru native. Malpartida now lives with his family in Katonah.

“DACA has done a lot for me, it has basically given me a work permit and able to get a driver's license and helped me support my family,” he says
