Hiker falls off cliff in Hi Tor State Park, suffers head trauma

Posted: Updated:

First responders staged a dramatic rescue of a hiker who fell off a cliff in Rockland County on Sunday.

Officials say a Thiells man fell and landed on rocks at Hi Tor State Park in New City.

Firefighters say getting him out of the woods wasn't easy. "We had to lower him about 40 feet down to a safe area, so that we could remove him from the woods, we had to put him in a stokes basket, use a high angle rescue team to lower him down, it was a labor intensive process where we could get him to a roadway and to a vehicle," says Timothy Coons, of the New City Fire Department

The victim was rushed to the hospital by ambulance for head trauma.

No word on his condition.
