One siren fails during Indian Point testPosted: Updated:
The Indian Point Energy Center in Buchanan conducted a full-system activation test of its siren system today.
Entergy officials say 171 of the 172 sirens in the four-county area around the power plant sounded successfully. The one siren that failed to go off was in Rockland County.
Because it was only a test, the public wasn’t required to respond during the siren sounding.
During an actual emergency, the sirens would not be a signal to evacuate. They would sound off followed by instructions on the Emergency Alert System on television and radio stations.
The Indian Point Energy Center is home to two operating nuclear power plants and supplies about 25 percent of power used in New York City and Westchester County. It is scheduled to close in 2021.
