Teachers “treat” kids to free books this Halloween

Posted: Updated:

A different kind of trick-or-treat event is being held for children in Port Chester before Halloween.

Teachers in in the city are treating kids to free books.

Teachers and parents say their goal is for kids to spend a little more time turning the page and a little less time swiping the screen. “Literacy is important-- especially in the day and age when kids are always on their phones. We feel it's important that they sit down with a book, be transported to another place and time, which is very different than reading the small little tidbits that they read on their phones,” says Laura DeChiara, president of Port Chester Teacher's Association.

“My daughter is in kindergarten and she has to read a book every night, so this helps because books are expensive!” says Darinca Sanchez-Lovega.
