A new playground coming to P.S. 115 in Canarsie is set to be designed by elementary students.
The whole project is part of Gov. Andrew Cuomo's Vital Brooklyn initiative. The $1.4 million playground won't only be open to students but to more than 1,600 people in the community.
The asphalt has been completely removed at what used to be the school yard. Soon it will be transformed into what students are calling their dream playground.
Officials say it will include an artificial turf field, running track, basketball hoops, play equipment, game tables, benches, a stage, gazebo with a living green-roof for kids to garden and an outdoor classroom.
The project is what Cuomo believes will increase access to open space and recreation. Elected officials, teachers and students gathered in the yard to break ground all while expressing excitement on what is yet to come.
They say it took them a year to put the project together.
According to Cuomo, the project is just one of the eight playgrounds throughout central Brooklyn that his initiative will tackle to address the need for more green-space.
The new playground is set to open in June of 2020.
