Yonkers community protests Danskammer energy project

Posted: Updated:

A group of protesters gathered at a fundraiser for Gov. Andrew Cuomo in Yonkers demanding cleaner energy.

About a dozen people showed up with signs at the Thompson Boyd Center Monday night chanting in hopes that Cuomo would hear their concerns.

They are protesting the proposed Danskammer energy project to build a natural gas-fired plant that would replace an existing facility in the Town of Newburgh.

Protesters with the nonprofit Food and Water Watch argue the plant is a direct contrast with the state's goals to produce more renewable energy. They say the new plant would use fracked gas from neighboring states.

Back in 2014, Cuomo's administration banned fracking statewide, citing health risks.

Protesters want the governor to take a bigger stance against the industry by saying no to the Danskammer power plant project.

The governor's office released a statement saying, "Governor Cuomo is fully committed to a swift and orderly transition away from fossil fuels as part of the state's nation-leading plan to address climate change."

According to the governor's office, New York is a leader in renewable energy, with goals to general 70% of its electricity from renewable resources by 2030.

The operator of Danskammer generating station has not yet filed an a state application for the proposed plant, which would be subject to the review of the public service commission.

Eight municipalities in the Hudson Valley have come out against the plant.

The city of Newburgh is expected to join that list by passing a resolution at a City Council meeting on Oct. 15.

News 12 reached to the Danskammer plant project and is waiting to hear back.
