Security increased after hacker changes school’s Google image to a gun

Posted: Updated:

Extra security was in place today at an Orange County middle school after someone hacked into the school’s website and replaced its Google image to a gun.

Town of Crawford Police Department and the Pine Bush Central School District officials tell News 12 the hacker changed the image for Crispell Middle School’s Google maps listing to a gun.

Police say they were alerted to this Thursday morning and immediately submitted a request to Google to have the image taken down.

The local police department along with the Pine Bush Central School District released a statement explaining where the image came from. They wrote in part,

"The police have established that the photo was taken from an online site – Reddit, and is not a picture that was locally sourced. As we continue to investigate this matter, the Town of Crawford will provide additional police coverage for Crispell Middle School on Friday."

The police department and the school district say the additional security at Crispell Middle School is just a precaution.

"I’m pretty confident with Pine Bush. I feel like my kids are safe…I'm sure that they're on top of it. But I do understand that nowadays it's better to be safe than sorry," says parent Jaimie Tamburello.
