Dozens of dead cats were found at a Montgomery home where the owner had been evicted.
The Montgomery town police chief called the conditions in the house "horrific."
The remains of 89 cats were removed from the house, according to the Times Herald-Record.
Boxes were also found in an open grave behind the house. At least one of them was labeled, reading, "RIP Zippy you were a good little girl."
Around eight cats were found alive.
Authorities say they are investigating and that animal cruelty charges could be filed by the Orange County District Attorney's Office.
Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
