Petition made to keep getaway driver in Yonkers baseball prospect's death behind bars

Posted: Updated:

One of the four men serving time for the murder of a rising baseball star from Yonkers will be eligible for early release in December. A petition is gaining traction to make sure he stays behind bars.

Michael Nolan was 23 years old when his life was cut short by a bullet in a drive-by shooting outside a Yonkers Burger King in September 2015. Nolan was a prospect for the Oakland Athletics.

Garth Cole, also 23 at the time, was the getaway driver for the gunmen. He's serving a five-year sentence for criminal possession of a weapon, but come December, he may be eligible for an early release.

"Anger, anger, complete anger, that whole feeling of just being punched in the stomach again," says Donna Nolan, Michael's mother.

The possibility led the Nolan family to start a Change.org petition to keep Cole behind bars. Michael's brother started the petition. It had 2,700 signatures as of Friday afternoon.

The Nolans say the deadline to sign the petition is the end of September. They're hoping to gather about 5,000 signatures to bring to the New York State Parole Board.
