Authorities issue warning about gift card donations

Posted: Updated:

Orange County authorities have issued a warning involving gift card donations.

Officials say scammers are posing as religious leaders and asking worshippers for gift card contributions for a "worthy cause."

The Consumer Affairs commissioner says the donations are being made by email, text or phone.

Red flags to watch out for can include incorrect church email, messages that begin with a simple "hi" and no recipient name, spelling errors, or if they ask you to buy a gift card such as iTunes or Amazon and for the pin number.

If you or someone you know paid a scammer with a gift card, report it as soon as possible to your local police department.
