Warwick police say two utility workers have died after working on electrical poles Monday.
Warwick Police Lt. Thomas Maslanka confirmed two utility workers who were working on the electrical lines on Continental Avenue off of Route 17A near the town's border appear to have been electrocuted.
"We received a call around 10 this morning of word of smoke on top of the mountain here in Warwick," says Maslanka. "Fire department responded and found what appears to be at this time an industrial accident involving two individuals who were working on the power lines in the woods."
Police say both of the men died at the scene. They have not confirmed the identities of the two men.
An employee for Orange and Rockland Utilities say the workers were contracted from EJ Electric. They say they were there to perform regularly scheduled maintenance on transmission poles when the electrical current went through them.
"Right now we're examining exactly how the guy-wire became energized and the 69,000 volts came down the guy-wire," says Mike Donovan, of Orange and Rockland Utilities.
The power was cut off in the surrounding areas after police and the utility company understood what happened. Businesses in Greenwood Lake say they didn't have power in the mid-morning due to the incident.
