Judge rules Wallace as acting mayor of Mount Vernon

Posted: Updated:

A judge has ruled Andre Wallace as the acting mayor of Mount Vernon until Jan. 1, 2020.

For more than a month, there has been a big debate over who the mayor of Mount Vernon is – Richard Thomas, Andre Wallace or Lisa Copeland.

On Thursday, a state Supreme Court judge settled it, naming Wallace the mayor until the end of the year.

The judge said that when Richard Thomas took a plea deal on July 8 in his criminal campaign finance case , he vacated his position. Wallace, who was City Council president at the time,  assumed the job. Two weeks ago, the City Council then tried to remove Wallace and appoint Lisa Copeland to the job of mayor. The judge called that decision a no-go.

Outside court, Wallace says he always knew he had the law on his side.

“I’m just hoping ..to get back to work,” he said.

The decision ends a chaotic five weeks in the city , where no one knew who was calling the shots or who to report to.

City Council President Lisa Copeland says the council accepts the judge's decision and is now prepared to move forward.

“We all have to work together to make our city better. That’s what we’re gonna go,” said Copeland.

Voters will have a say in November during the general election. Shawn Patterson-Howard recently won the Democratic primary for mayor. She beat out acting Mayor Wallace, who has said he will run against her on the Republican ticket.
