MOUNT VERNON -

A 4-year-old Mount Vernon girl is dead and her mother is in critical condition after they were struck by a car Monday afternoon.

Mount Vernon police say it happened around 5 p.m. on North Fifth Avenue near North Street in a tightknit Brazilian community.

Witnesses say 4-year-old Megan Gouvea De Freitas ran into the street and her 42-year-old mother, Josiana, chased after her. They say both of them were struck and then dragged by the vehicle.

Police say when they got to the scene the little girl and her mom were both on the ground.

Neighbors in the area say they heard screams.

Police say the driver, a 60-year-old Mount Vernon resident, remained at the scene. No charges have been filed at this time. The crash is under investigation.
