Position of Mount Vernon acting mayor remains up for debate

MOUNT VERNON -

The question of who is the acting mayor of Mount Vernon is still up for debate.

The City Council was behind closed doors all day long, apparently working on a resolution.

The City Council voted 4-1 to install Council member Lisa Copeland as City Council president and acting mayor, deeming Andre Wallace unfit.

The council says they demoted Wallace to councilman because of decisions he made without the group's input.

The city's new corporation counsel Lauren Raysor says legally, Wallace is still the acting mayor, and that the council could not vote in a new president any time they want.

Councilwoman Janice Duarte says she believes Copeland is the mayor.
