Posters displayed around New Rochelle remind immigrants about their rightsPosted: Updated:
Dozens of New Rochelle residents are hanging posters around the city to remind immigrants that they are welcome.
One poster says, "New Rochelle is one community. Say no to cruelty, fear and division. ICE cannot enter without a judicial warrant." The posters are written in English and Spanish.
Organizers went door-to-door Saturday asking businesses if they can hang the posters on windows so everyone can see.
Residents were joined by local and state officials, including Rep. Eliot Engel and Sen. Shelley Mayer.
Organizers say the main goal is to educate people about their rights.
"I want to make sure that people are not living in fear and there's been a huge presence of ICE police in our neighborhood over the last month or two and it's creating a sort of reign of terror," said Martin Sanchez.
They say they want families to feel at home and to not worry when they leave their homes.
