Westchester County Executive George Latimer announced Thursday that the county has received $4.1 million in federal funding to address lead issues in low-income homes.

Health officials say lead can cause serious neurological and behavioral issues in children that are believed to be irreversible.

The funding will help low-income homeowners and local nonprofit groups the most, including the Interfaith Council For Action, which used prior funds to make sure a home was lead-free

"Safely removing lead from homes will not only protect the children that are currently in these homes. But any child that resides there going forward,” says Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler.

The grant will help rehabilitate over 200 properties over the course of three years.
